Plans for a sequel to the 1986 fighter pilot film "Top Gun" have been confirmed by Paramount.

Rumors are swirling that Tom Cruise is willing to reprise the character of Maverick if the script for the movie is up to standards. Prior co-stars, Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis, have not yet been confirmed for the follow-up.

The "Top Gun" sequel would likely be first priority over a fifth installment of the "Mission: Impossible," series for Tom Cruise.

"We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first," says Paramount executive Adam Goodman. "Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct... All parties are moving ahead."

Peter Craig, who wrote the screenplay for "The Town," has been contacted to possibly write the script.
