Telecom Argentina Q1 Profit Rises

Argentina's telecommunications company Telecom Argentina S A (TEO: Quote) announced a net Income of P$708 million for the first-quarter ended March 31, 2012, up 11% from the same period last year, due to a higher Operating Profit and positive financial results. Net income attributable to Telecom Argentina amounted to P$698 million, up 10% from last year.

Consolidated Revenues for the quarter increased by 24% to P$5.126 billion from the prior year quarter, mainly fueled by the Mobile Services and Broadband businesses.

The Swiss National Bank on Thursday reaffirmed its currency ceiling and interest rate unchanged, as expected by economists, and expressed willingness to do more to defend the franc. The central bank maintained the minimum exchange rate of CHF 1.20 per euro and left the target range for the three-month Libor unchanged at 0.0-0.25 percent. The South Korean government said Thursday it will increase the budget spending next year and run a wider fiscal deficit than expected to bolster economic growth that faces challenges from slow global recovery and weak domestic demand. Government spending will rise by 5.7 percent to KRW 376 trillion the next year, the finance ministry said in its budget proposals. Stocks saw some volatility following the release of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement on Wednesday but managed to end the day modestly higher. With the upward move, the Dow reached a new record closing high.
