United Fire Group Inc (UFCS: Quote) reported that its first-quarter net income was $19.18 million or $0.75 per share, compared to $5.81 million or $0.22 per share in the same quarter last year.

Operating income increased to $0.68 per share from $0.16 per share last year. Total revenues for the quarter rose to $193.70 million from $144..08 million in the prior year quarter.

While the IRS targeting scandal has taken center stage on Capitol Hill on Friday, the results of a new Gallup poll showed that the American public's interest in the story is comparatively low based on historical measures. The poll showed that 54 percent of Americans are following the news that the IRS targeted conservative groups for greater scrutiny "very" or "somewhat" closely.
