U.S. Sitcom Actor George 'Goober Pyle' Lindsey Dies

The U.S. sitcom actor George "Goober Pyle" Lindsey has died at age 83, reported the Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville. He passed away Sunday after a brief illness.

Lindsey was known for portraying mechanic "Goober Pyle" on "The Andy Griffith Show," starting in 1964 until 1968. He went on to play the same character on "Hee Haw" in 1971 until 1993.

The actor also appeared on television shows, such as "Mash" and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour." He also starred in films, like "Cannonball Run II" and lent his voice to animation films, like "Robin Hood," "The Rescuers" and "The Aristocats."

"George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit," said Andy Griffith about his longtime friend in a statement sent out by the funeral home.
