NBC has asked for a comic series from Ryan Murphy ("Glee," "American Horror Story") and a dramatic series from J.J. Abrams ("Lost"). The new programs, respectively, are "The New Normal" and "Revolution."

The plot of the Abrams comedy, co-written by Ali Adler ("Glee"), centers on a gay couple (Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha) and a woman (Georgia King) who serves as a surrogate for their growing family. Ellen Barkin co-stars and NeNe Leakes landed a role in a recurring spot.

Abrams, who now will have three series up and running (including "Fringe" and "Person of Interest"), will write "Revolution" with Eric Kripke ("Supernatural").

The plot of that series centers on a family's attempts to reunite following an apocalyptic event. Billy Burke ("Twilight") stars alongside David Lyons, Giancarlo Esposito, Tracy Spiridakos, Graham Rogers, Anna Lise Phillips, Tim Guinee, Andrea Roth, JD Pardo and Zak Orth.
