Jack White has made public his private wish to play a vinyl record in outer space. He added, in a recent interview, that he has contrived a "secret project" to advance his goal.

Speaking with Interview magazine, White laid out his intergalactic designs: he released a song, "A Glorious Dawn," in 2009 (via his own Third Man Records); that track has lyrics by physicist Stephen Hawking which honor astronomer Carl Sagan:

"Carl Sagan was a huge influence. We want to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player, and possibly that Carl Sagan record, and figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play."

White spoke with astronaut Buzz Aldrin for the Interview interview. He also confided in Aldrin that his decision to end the career of the White Stripes was necessary in order that he might pursue a solo career unburdened by the Stripes name.
