South Korea and Australia agreed on Monday to hold joint naval drills on a regular basis from this year as part of efforts to strengthen their bilateral defense cooperation.
The agreement was reached after a meeting earlier in the day between South Korean Navy Chief Adm. Choi Yun-hee and his Australian counterpart Vice-Adm. Ray Griggs, who arrived in the Far East country on a four-day visit.
During the meeting held at the Korean Naval Academy in the south-eastern port city of Jinhae, the two sides also discussed ways to promote defense ties. Choi asked Griggs to help South Korean defense contractors join a project by the Royal Australian Navy to modernize its naval forces, the the Yonhap news agency reported quoting Navy officials.
Navies of the two countries have held seven rounds of talks since 2000, the report added.
