Robin Gibb, 62, succumbed to colon cancer on Sunday, May 20 at a Chelsea hospital with his family at his side.

"Sunday 20 May, 2012 at 10:46: The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time," Gibb's family said in a statement.

Gibb had been hospitalized multiple times in the last two years for intestinal complications caused by cancer. In his last days, the cancer had spread from his colon to his liver; finally, he contracted pneumonia before slipping into a coma.

Radio host Paul Gambaccini summarized Gibb's achievements in a BBC Radio 5 Live broadcast shortly after his death:

"He was one of the important figures in the history of British music - and I mean of all time, I don't mean just the last few years or the rock era, I mean of all time."
