Maryland-based Indonesianfoodmart.com is recalling all packages of "Tempeh Starter Yeast" as they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled products, " Tempeh Starter Yeast "and "Super Starter Yeast", were distributed nationwide through direct mail orders. The products were sold in sizes ranging: 30 gms, 50 gms, 250 gms, and 1000 gms.
The products were also distributed to countries such as Australia, Canada, Slovenia, New Zealand, Brunei, Darussalam, Poland and Croatia.
The potential for contamination was noted after testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which revealed the presence of Salmonella in some of the products. Several illnesses have been reported to date that could possibly be related to the problem.
The company discontinued their operations after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified it of the problem. Indonesianfoodmart.com did not manufacture the product which was imported from Indonesia.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
