'Skyfall' Trailer Gives New Vibe For James Bond Franchise

"Skyfall," November 9th (Sony):

After disappointing James Bond entry "Quantum of Solace," it looks like director Sam Mendes is taking the franchise back to its roots, which already worked very well when introducing Daniel Craig in "Casino Royale."

The first trailer for "Skyfall" shows our favorite British superspy in a dark and complex world that seems to be light years away from the whimsical Pierce Brosnan Bond films of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Even compared with the stark and relatively realistic "Casino Royale," it looks like "Skyfall" will plunge even further into murky territory.

This time around, producers have not only added art house director Mendes, best known for "American Beauty" and "Revolutionary Road," but they've also picked up Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem.

Fiennes appears briefly as Judi Dench's MI-6 sidekick and Bardem doesn't make it to the teaser trailer, though he plays a villain-type role that seems to be a perfect fit after he won an Oscar as the bad guy in "No Country for Old Men."

Mendes hasn't made a commercial action film to date, but the first trailer for "Skyfall" promises that there will be as much story development as gunplay and explosions, which takes Bond back to the image originally created by novelist Ian Fleming.

"Skyfall" looks like one of the most interesting big-budget movies hitting theaters this fall.

The trailer for "Skyfall" can be viewed at the movie's official site.

Box office outlook:

The James Bond franchise continues to be a big draw all over the world, and fans have accepted Daniel Craig with open arms.

Even though "Quantum of Solace" was mostly lashed by critics after acclaimed "Casino Royale," the box office numbers remained very strong.

Considering that each of the last two entries racked up more than $500 million worldwide, "Skyfall" should have no problem earning money at the box office and it has enormous commercial potential if it really clicks with audiences.
