Real estate mogul Donald Trump, of "The Apprentice" fame, heavily criticized President Barack Obama's fiscal policies this week, while also saying he'd like to "continue" to help Mitt Romney in his presidential bid.
"I am thinking about just doing my own super PAC," Trump told Congressman John LeBoutillier in an exclusive Newsmax interview. "If I did [an ad] I would show how bad we're doing as a country, how disrespected we are as a country," he added.
In the interiew, Trump bemoaned the state of the U.S. economy, tying American financial troubles back to our foreign and trade policies with China multiple times.
"I'm a believer in fair trade, not necessarily free trade. We don't have fair trade. You try to do business in China," he said. "And I think Mitt Romney's the perfect combination we're going to see. I heard Mitt start talking about China, and he's the only one that gets it, the only one who understands what China is doing to this country."
Mitt Romney also continued to attack the president's financial policies, telling Fox News on Thursday, "There is no question but that [President Obama] is attacking capitalism. In part, I think, because he doesn't understand how the free economy works. He's never had a job in the free economy. Neither has Vice President Biden. They spent their lives as either community organizers or as members of the political class."
After a brief hiatus from the presidential campaign scene, Trump is returning to the political stage more and more, confirming he will appear with Newt Gingrich at a May 29 Romney fundraiser at Trump Towers in Las Vegas. He will also give the keynote speech at a meeting of North Carolina Republicans on June 1.
Piggybacking on Obama's successful raffle of $3 tickets to attend fundraisers hosted by George Clooney, Sarah Jessica Parker and former President Bill Clinton, Romney will also give his supporters a chance to meet the Donald in New York by making a small campaign contribution. Winners will also get to tour "The Apprentice" boardroom and stay in Trump Tower.
Some pundits are already making light of the strange pairing of gregarious and often outlandish Trump and the Mormon former governor of Massachusetts. Seeming to reinforce the unusual team, Trump gladly took much of the credit for recent Romney and Republican victories.
"I think I've been a big help to Mitt," Trump told Newsmax. "I think I've helped him a lot with four or five states that were marginal, very close. I helped in Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin.
"A couple of other places, even Nevada where he won by substantially more the day I endorsed him. I've given him a lot of help and I really am very honored to have done it. He's a good man. I think he'd be a good president."
Even the dinner invitation's graphic, a play on the famous Uncle Sam armed services poster, features a picture of the Donald pointing outward and stating "I want YOU - Dine with the Donald." Only as an afterthought, it appears, was a handwritten "& Mitt" added to the proposal's poster.
