As Legacy Recordings releases various 25th anniversary packages for Paul Simon's Graceland on June 5, a new documentary will also be included, entitled Under African Skies.
Under African Skies chronicles the controversial recording of Graceland and its subsequent impact, and enduring influence, on world music and pop culture. The critically-acclaimed documentary is from Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Brother's Keeper, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster).
The new documentary, set for release June 5, takes Simon back to South Africa, a quarter century after the making of Graceland. He revisits the making of the record, surveying from the vantage of history the turbulence and controversy surrounding the album's genesis, including his decision to collaborate with African musicians and combine American and African music while igniting an intense political crossfire. Simon was also accused of breaking the UN cultural boycott of South Africa designed to end the Apartheid regime.
