The surgical anesthetic that was linked to the death of Michael Jackson has now been approved for lethal injection use in the state of Missouri. The drug, called Propofol, has not yet been fully tested as an execution method and some death penalty opponents are calling foul.
The move to begin using Propofol in lethal injections comes after the makers of the drug sodium thiopental ceased distributing the chemical to the United States after its manufacuters learned that it was being used in executions. The drug is used to sedate death row inmates before other drugs are administered to stop their heart and lungs from functioning by way of a toxic cocktail.
"This is very, very concerning with a drug that we don't know, and seeing the problems of the one-drug method," said Kathleen Holmes of Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty to todayonline.com.
