Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast has been named the greatest album in British music made during Queen Elizabeth II's 60-year reign. Retailer HMV held a survey online asking 30,000 music fans to rate their favorite albums during the time period.

Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson said he was shocked and thrilled that the band was number one on the list.

"We're astonished and delighted to hear The Number of the Beast has been named number one in HMV's Diamond Jubilee survey for the greatest British album. Some of the most influential and classic albums from the past 60 years were in the running so it's a testament to our incredibly loyal and ever-supportive fans who voted for us," he said in a statement.

Other albums in the top 20 included Depeche Mode's Violator, Adele's 21 and the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
