Automobile production in Japan increased markedly in April, gradually recovering from the collapse following last year's deadly earthquake.

The latest figures released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) showed that production in April was 799,474 units, up by 507,430 units or 173.8 percent from the same month of the previous year.

Production rose for a seventh consecutive month, data showed. Production of passenger cars increased by 442,239 units to 692,011 last month.

Domestic sales rose 93.7 percent year-on-year to 359,631, while exports rose 219.2 percent compared to the same month last year.

JAMA also reported that motorcycle production rose 1.2 percent annually to 44,267 units. Production increased on the same month of the previous year for five consecutive months.
