TJX May Consolidated Comparable Store Sales Increase 8%; Revises Q2 EPS Outlook

TJX Companies, Inc. (TJX: Quote) said sales for the four-week period ended May 26, 2012 improved 10% to $1.9 billion from $1.7 billion in the four-week period ended May 28, 2011. Consolidated comparable store sales for the four-week period ended May 26, 2012 rose 8% over prior year.

For the 17-week period ended May 26, 2012, sales grew 11% to $7.7 billion from $6.9 billion in the year-ago period. Consolidated comparable store sales for the period increased 8% over the same period last year.

Carol Meyrowitz, chief executive officer of TJX, said, "We now expect second quarter earnings per share to be at the high end of our previously estimated range of $0.47 - $0.50."

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.51 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

The Japanese government on Monday upgraded its assessment of the economy for the first time in two months, as a weak yen helped revive the country's exports and factory output. "The Japanese economy is picking up slowly," the Cabinet Office said in its May monthly report. This was an upgrade from previous month's assessment when it said that economy was showing signs of picking up. Stocks moved sharply higher over the course of the trading day on Friday, more than offsetting the weakness seen on Thursday. In a reversal from the previous session, the markets benefited from some upbeat U.S. economic data as well as comments from a Federal Reserve official.
