Phillip Phillips Sets 'American Idol' Digital Sales Record

Phillip Phillips Sets 'American Idol' Digital Sales Record

Phillip Phillips, the season 11 winner of "American Idol," sold 278,000 downloads of his debut single, "Home," in its first week, setting the digital record for "Idol" champs.

"Home" beat out David Cook's "The Time of My Life," which sold 236,000 downloads in 2008. The sales figure was enough to bump Phillips into the two spot on Billboard's Digital Songs chart.

"Home" also has the second most digital sales of any "Idol" winner to date, bested only by Kelly Clarkson's 2009 hit, "My Life Would Suck without You."

CD single sales are another story as fellow champ Clay Aiken, sold 393,000 copies of his "This Is the Night" in its first week. Ruben Studdard is second with 286,000 for "Flying without Wings."

Earlier this week, Phillips had to delay surgery to treat his recurrent kidney stone problem due to a severe sinus infection.
