An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced former President Hosni Mubarak to life in prison.

The 84-year old deposed leader was convicted for his involvement in the murder of protesters during last year's uprising. Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly also received a life sentence.

However, Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, were acquitted on separate corruption charges. The verdict sparked clashes outside the court.

Mubarak had stepped down in February 2011 after ruling the nation for 30 years. The power was handed over to the country's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
