Even with plenty of competition for its target audience, "Snow White and the Huntsman" had no problem opening over the weekend, brining in $56 million on a strong per theater average just under $15,000. "Men in Black III" also had a decent second weekend, dipping less than 50% from its opening totals and pushing its 10-day total to a solid $112 million domestically. Historical drama "For Greater Glory" also landed in the top ten in a limited release, though with only $1.8 million in revenue it shouldn't have much of an impact in theaters moving forward.
With Charlize Theron starring as a revamped Evil Queen, "Snow White and the Huntsman" was clearly a much darker interpretation of the Snow White fairytale from the very beginning of Universal's marketing experts. Toss in popular actress Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth of "The Avengers" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" ended up with a well-known cast that was able to help get it off the ground in its opening weekend. With a per venue average of $14,910, "Snow White and the Huntsman" ended up with the third highest total for a wide release this year, trailing only "The Hunger Games" and "The Avengers."
The downside for "Snow White and the Huntsman" is that overseas numbers haven't been as strong as some of the other big-budget action movies this year. Even though movies like "Battleship" and "Wrath of the Titans" struggled to find domestic moviegoers, they've done very well abroad, giving them strong overall numbers. So far, "Snow White and the Huntsman" has pulled in just $39 million outside of the U.S., which isn't a good sign for a movie that cost $175 million to produce.
Moving forward, "Snow White and the Huntsman" will have some tough competition from Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel "Prometheus" starting this upcoming weekend, followed by releases like music drama "Rock of Ages" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." "Snow White and the Huntsman" hasn't had very good critical buzz either, which could be a sign that it will see a fast decline in revenue as it competes with a plethora of other movies in the coming weeks.
While "Snow White and the Huntsman" scooped up most of the action-seeking moviegoers, Andy Garcia-starring historical drama "For Greater Glory" had an expectedly weak opening. With a minimal marketing campaign and no real buzz to speak of, "For Greater Glory" was launched at just 757 venues across the country this weekend, enough for a meager opening intake of just $1.8 million. Considering it had a per venue average of only $2,378, "For Greater Glory" should see a dramatic dip in screenings and will likely fall out of the top ten by the end of next weekend.
The weekend was also the first since early March that "The Hunger Games" didn't land in the top ten, following a very strong box office run that helped launch a new franchise for distributor Lionsgate. "The Hunger Games" reached the top ten for a year-best 10 consecutive weekends, helping push its domestic total to $398 million and counting. As it climb past $400 million in domestic revenue, it will become only the second movie of the year to do so and buzz for "Catching Fire" - the second in the planned trilogy - is sure to be very strong as Lionsgate gets ready for its fall 2013 release date.
Next weekend, the box office will heat up with the release of director Ridley Scott's highly anticipated "Prometheus," an R-rated prequel to "Alien" starring Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" is also in a good position to scoop up family audiences due to a complete lack of mainstream family films currently playing in theaters. The rest of the month will see movies like Tom Cruise's "Rock of Ages," Pixar's latest film "Brave," horror-thriller "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and Woody Allen's "To Rome with Love."
