Japan's leading index dropped in April to the lowest level in three months, preliminary data published by the Cabinet Office revealed Thursday.

The leading index fell to 95.1 in April from 96.4 in March. The reading matched economists' forecast. The index signals the direction of the economy in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, the coincident index, that measures the current economic activity, edged down to 96.5 from 96.7 in the previous month.

The lagging index came in at 86.5, down marginally from March's 86.7.
