Greek Unemployment Rate Rises To 21.9% In March

Unemployment in Greece increased to a record high in March as the country struggles hard to tackle the debt crisis and avoid an exit from the Eurozone, data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate rose to 21.9 percent in March from 21.4 percent in February. The latest figure was sharply higher than 15.7 percent recorded in March last year. The jobless rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, was 52.8 percent, up from 42 percent a year earlier.

The number of unemployed persons in the country increased 2.1 percent from the previous month to around 1.08 million in March. Compared to the same month last year, the number of unemployed surged by 37.8 percent.

The number of employed persons, meanwhile, decreased 0.6 percent sequentially in March, while on an annual basis it fell by 8.2 percent, the agency said.
