Australia To Lift Sanctions On Myanmar

6/8/2012 1:49 AM ET

Australia will lift sanctions imposed on Myanmar, excluding an arms embargo, to encourage the South Asian country's ongoing democracy movement.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr, now on a visit to Myanmar, made the announcement on Thursday after meeting with President Thein Sein and Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Carr welcomed the ongoing democratic process in the country and stressed the need to speed it up, media reports said.

He said sanctions would be lifted in a few weeks and that would include ban on financial transactions and travel restrictions on those related to the military.

Carr also announced that his country would double its annual aid to Myanmar to around $100 million by 2015 mainly in the areas of education, medicine, law and social support systems.
