Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in Beijing on Friday and exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.
Hu congratulated Afghanistan on becoming an observer of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), China's state media reported.
Calling Karzai an old friend of the Chinese people, Hu appreciated his long-term commitment to bilateral friendly cooperation and his contribution to the development of bilateral ties.
As a reliable neighbor to Afghanistan, China will unswervingly stick to friendly policies and continue to provide sincere and selfless help to the war-torn country, Hu said.
Karzai thanked the Chinese President for his warm hospitality as well as his steadfast support for Afghanistan becoming an SCO observer. "Without your support, we cannot do this," he said.
Karzai said bilateral relations had developed positively in the past decade, and continued to deepen.
Karzai is in Beijing on a visit to China during which he attended the SCO summit held on Wednesday and Thursday.
