6/8/2012 3:35 AM ET

Hungary recorded strong trade surplus in April, which was, however, below economists' expectations, preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office showed Friday.

The trade balance was a surplus of EUR396.3 million in April, lower than the EUR424.8 million surplus recorded in the same month last year. Economists were looking for a surplus of EUR415 million.

Export of goods decreased 3.9 percent year-on-year to EUR6.106 billion during the month. The value of imports fell by 3.6 percent on an annual basis to EUR8.709 billion.

In the January-April period, the trade balance was a surplus of EUR2.142 billion, down from the previous year's surplus of EUR2.554 billion. Exports decreased 1.5 percent year-on-year during the four-month period, while imports remained unchanged.
