British Construction Orders Rebound In Q1

New orders received by UK construction firms increased in the first quarter, recovering from the previous quarter's decline, data released by the Office for National Statistics showed Friday.

The volume of new construction orders rose a seasonally adjusted 4.6 percent quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter, reversing the revised 5.2 percent contraction recorded in the fourth quarter.

New orders of non-housing private commercial works gained 27.8 percent sequentially, while orders of non-housing private industrial works surged 57.9 percent. There was a 2.2 percent growth in non-housing public works in the first three months of the year.

New orders in the public hosing sector increased 5.7 percent quarter-over-quarter in the first quarter, while order of private housing works fell by 10.7 percent.

On an annual basis, however, new construction orders decreased 3.6 percent during the three-month period, the agency said.
