Lauryn Hill could face jail time for reportedly failing to pay income taxes between 2005 and 2007. According to a new report from the U.K.'s Guardian, the former Fugees star earned $1.8 million during that time period and faces three counts of tax evasion.
Each of the tax evasion counts carries a possible sentence of one year in prison plus a $100,000 fine. Hill will appear in a Newark, New Jersey court after being charged by the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday. She has been relatively quiet since the release of her last album in 1996.
Her new album is due sometime this year, and she recently said of the album:
"There are a lot of different creative energies out there right now. I respect the different sounds that I'm hearing. It's been such a long time since I've gotten my voice and my ideas out . . . I'm happy that people are still making music. That we still have a platform with which to make music. It's gonna be interesting to see what the future holds."
