Robin Roberts returned to "Good Morning America" on Tuesday (June 12), one day after disclosing that she has myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a blood and bone marrow disease. She's set to get a bone-marrow transplant from her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts.
"My doctors tell me I'm going to beat this — and I know it's true," she said in the statement. "If you Google MDS, you may find some scary stuff, including statistics that my doctors insist don't apply to me. They say I'm younger and fitter than most people who confront this disease and will be cured."
Roberts will begin receiving treatment immediately, and, despite the adversity, she was upbeat on Tuesday's program:
"I slept like a baby for the first time since my diagnosis." After her transplant she is expected to take a month long hiatus.
