Carrie Underwood Speaks Out About Supporting Gay Marriage
6/12/2012 1:45 PM ET

Carrie Underwood has spoken up for gay marriage rights in a recent interview with the Independent, saying that "as a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry."

She added, when asked about how she can reconcile her support for the LBGT community with her Christian faith, that the two are not mutually exclusive:

"Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me.' No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."

Chely Wright, a country singer who married her lesbian partner in 2010, hit Twitter to call Underwood's support "brave."
