Lauryn Hill has responded to the reports that she evaded paying taxes from 2005 to 2007 on earninges estimated to be $1.8 million. The R&B/hip-hop singer took to Tumblr to tell her side of the story.
She explained that her success forced her to remove herself from "a more mainstream and public life."
"During this period of crisis, much was said about me both slanted and inaccurate, by those who had become dependent on my creative force, yet unwilling to fully acknowledge the importance of my contribution, nor compensate me equitably for it," she opined.
It was this "period of crisis," following her smash album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which led to the alleged tax evasion.
"My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes," she wrote.
The former Fugees members is scheduled for a June 29th court date in Newark.
