Norway's merchandise trade surplus increased from last year in May, helped by a sharp increase in shipments of oil and gas, data released by Statistics Norway showed Friday.

The trade surplus advanced to NOK35.488 billion in May from NOK24.556 billion in the same month last year.

Export of goods increased 15.5 percent on an annual basis to NOK78.7 billion during the month, driven mainly by a 22.6 percent growth in oil exports and a 37.2 percent rise in natural gas exports. Shipments, excluding crude oil, natural gas and condensates increased 1.2 percent on an annual basis.

The value of imports, meanwhile, edged down by 0.9 percent annually to NOK43.212 billion in May, the agency said.
