Belgium's merchandise exports increased modestly in April, after falling in the previous month, preliminary data released by the National Bank of Belgium showed Friday.

Exports increased 0.2 percent on an annual basis to EUR19.8 billion in April, after falling 2.1 percent in March.

The value of imports, meanwhile, decreased 0.4 percent year-on-year to EUR19.9 billion, notably slower than the 4.2 percent decline seen in the previous month.

Belgium's foreign trade was balanced in April, with the value of exports and imports being broadly the same. In March, the trade balance was a surplus of EUR0.1 billion, data showed.

In the first quarter, the value of shipments decreased 3.9 percent from the same period last year, while imports fell by 6.3 percent, data showed.
