Bay Street stocks edged up at open Friday amid marginal buying across a variety of sectors, with the S&P/TSX Composite Index adding 32.35 points or 0.28 percent to 11,498.77.
The Diversified Materials Index rose nearly 1 percent, with First Quantum Minerals (FM.TO) and Teck Resources (TCK_B.TO) adding around 1 percent each.
In the oil patch, Encana Corp. (ECA.TO), Ecopetrol SA (ECP.TO) and Cenovus Energy (CVE.TO) rose over 1 percent each.
Bombardier Inc. (BBD_A.TO) moved up 3 percent after it's rail systems division, Bombardier Transportation signed a $631 million contract with the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District.
Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (VRX.TO) edged up after it said it would acquire OraPharma, a specialty oral health company.
Meanwhile, gold stocks were trading marginally lower, with Allied Nevada Gold (ANV.TO), Goldcorp. (G.TO) and Royal Gold (RGL.TO) slipping around 1 percent each.
