John Edwards' affair with campaign aide-turned-mistress Rielle Hunter is described in intimate detail in Hunter's new book, which she is beginning to promote this week.
Titled "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me," the book shows up close what was going on behind the scenes during Edwards and Hunter's affair in 2008, when he was running for president, up until his indictment for campaign finance corruption.
Last month, Edwards was acquitted of a charge of accepting illegal campaign contributions and a mistrial was declared on five other counts because the jury was deadlocked.
The verdict came after prosecutors spent a year investigating Edwards and developing their case that he had used financial donations to hide and house Hunter during the 2008 campaign. Prosecutors announced this month they would not re-charge Edwards.
Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, wrote her memoirs in 2010, shortly before her death from breast cancer. She was coping with the cancer during her husband's affair.
However, neither Edwards nor Hunter testified during his corruption trial, meaning that Hunter's book is the first revealing look at the affair from their point of view.
She plans an ABC News interview that will air on Friday, followed by interviews with "Good Morning America," "Nightline," and "The View" next Tuesday.
In the book, Hunter remembers first meeting Edwards in a bar in New York City in 2006, telling him "You're hot," and passing him her business card. She was later hired to create a video for his campaign.
The book goes on to describe how the two would meet by sneaking in and out of hotel rooms and of Elizabeth Edwards' wrath when she learned of the affair.
Hunter describes Edwards as a doting father to the child that resulted from their affair - Quinn, now four years old.
As for a romantic future between Hunter and Edwards, she acknowledges still having feelings for the former senator and presidential candidate but is uncertain about marriage.
She does relate promising Edwards that she and her child would move near whatever prison Edwards would have been sent to.
