Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was lingering near death late Tuesday after suffering both a stroke and a heart attack.
News outlets began reporting from a broadcast on state-run television late in the afternoon, saying the former president's heart had to be re-started and that he was in critical condition and breathing only with the aid of an artificial respirator.
"We were informed by prison authority that Mubarak's heart has stopped and they used electric shocks and CPR to resurrect him," Adel Saeed, official spokesman of the Egyptian prosecutor, told CNN. "He is now on an artificial respirator and doctors from the armed forces and International Medical Center will inspect him."
Mubarak, 84, was overthrown in February 2011 after a civilian uprising that trigged the so-called "Arab Spring" throughout the Mideast, which later brought the downfall of Moammar Gaddahfi in neighboring Libya and the continuing struggle against Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Mubarak was put on trial last August for crimes during the uprising and sentenced to life in prison by an Egyptian court this month.
