The United States has strongly condemned the rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel, which has dramatically and dangerously escalated in the past day.

In a statement issued by State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland, Washington reiterated that "there is no justification for the targeting of innocent civilians," and called on "those responsible to take immediate action to stop these cowardly acts."

To avoid an escalation of the situation, the U.S. government called on all parties to exercise restraint.

In a separate statement by the State Department, the United States expressed deep concern over the crackdown by the Sudanese authorities on peaceful demonstrators in Khartoum over the last three days. It called on the Sudanese government to respect the right of its citizens to freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly in order to raise their grievances.

"In addition to the crackdowns on peaceful demonstrators, we are concerned that Sudanese authorities have increased pre-publication censorship of independent newspapers in recent weeks," said the statement by Nuland.

Washington called on Sudan to respect freedom of expression, including for members of the press, as guaranteed in the Interim National Constitution of 2005 and internationally recognized covenants to which the Sudanese government is party.
