Italy's trade with non-EU countries resulted in a surplus in May, compared to a deficit last year, data released by statistical office Istat showed Thursday.
The trade balance turned to a surplus of EUR306 million in May from a deficit of EUR1.877 billion in the same month last year.
Exports to non-EU nations increased 14.1 percent annually during the month. Sequentially, the value of shipments increased a seasonally adjusted 5.5 percent.
Imports from countries outside the European Union, meanwhile, decreased 0.9 percent compared to last year in May. Month-on-month, arrivals advanced 1.2 percent during the month.
In the January-May period, the balance was a deficit of EUR6.745 billion, down from the EUR15.378 billion deficit seen in the same period a year earlier. Exports increased 9.3 percent annually during the period, while imports decreased 3.1 percent, data showed.
