Two suspected insurgents have been detained over the killing of an American soldier by Gunmen in Afghan police uniforms in southern Afghanistan earlier this week.

They were arrested in an operation by Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, to detain a Taliban leader who was responsible for Tuesday's "green-on-blue" attack in Zharay district, Kandahar province, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a press release on Thursday.

Security forces were in search of the three gunmen who fled immediately after carrying out the attack.

It was the latest in a series of such incidents of civilians or militants, disguised as Afghan security personnel, as well as Afghan soldiers themselves targeting ISAF personnel. It is estimated that at least 23 ISAF personnel have been killed in some 17 such incidents, labeled by the media as "green-on-blue" attack.

A Haqqani weapons facilitator, who was responsible for supplying weapons for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Sharan district, Paktika province, was apprehended in a separate joint operation in the region.

Separately, a combined unit of Afghan and coalition security force destroyed 1,500 kilograms of explosive materials in Nawah district, Ghazni province, on Tuesday.

During a search in the ruins of a compound, the combined force discovered an explosives cache comprising of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, both key ingredients in the production of home-made explosives.
