Malta Unemployment Rate Drops To 6.1% In Q1

Unemployment in Malta decreased from last year in the three months ended March, data released by the National Statistics Office showed Tuesday.

The unemployment rate declined to 6.1 percent in the first quarter from 6.4 percent in the same period a year earlier. The unemployment rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, was 13.1 percent, lower than 14.1 percent recorded a year earlier.

There were 11,040 jobless and persons in Malta at the end the first quarter, down from 11,517 in the fist quarter of 2011, data showed.

The employment rate, meanwhile, increased moderately to 58.6 percent in the January-March period from 57.4 percent a year earlier. The number of employed persons rose to 171,270 from 168,023 last year, the agency said.
