Diane McDermott, mother of Dylan McDermott, was shot dead in 1967, in what at the time, was ruled as an accident. However, last year, police officers reopened the case and have now determined it was not an accident.

Diane's boyfriend at the time, John Sponza has been retroactively charged with the murder. Sponza, who had tied to organized crime, was killed in 1972, and his body was found in the trunk of a car.

The investigation was re-opened after Dylan approached police with his doubts regarding his mother's supposed suicide.

"He said, 'In order for me to survive and to get where I am today, I needed to bury that moment in my life deep within myself,'" Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti told the Republican-American. "He said it wasn't until recently 'that I've come to the point in my life where I'm able to begin to process all of this.'"

Sponza reportedly told police at the time that Diane had committed suicide.
