Original Spider From Mars Talks Split From David Bowie

Original Spider From Mars Talks Split From David Bowie

Woody Woodmansey, the drummer for Spiders from Mars, recently gave an interview with the BBC providing his explanation of David Bowie's decision to dissolve the group and his Ziggy Stardust character.

"I was reading a magazine and there was a Lamborghini in it," Woodmansey explained, "I said, 'Oh, that's nice,' and [keyboardist] Mike [Garson] said, 'Well, why don't you buy one?' I said, 'I wish.'"

As the conversation wore on, Woodmansey discovered that Garson's salary "was three times what I got."

Woodmansey then attempted to get a raise from manager Tony Defries, who told him "I would rather pay the road crew more than you. 'I thought, 'There's no game here'."

The issue of compensation would cause an irreparable rift between Bowie and the rest of the Spiders, leading Bowie to call it quits with the Spiders onstage at the Hammersmith Odeon on the last night of the Ziggy Stardust tour.
