Mongolia Goes To Polls To Elect New Parliament

6/28/2012 3:15 AM ET

Mongolia went to the polls on Thursday to elect a new Parliament, with the ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP) and the Opposition Democratic Party holding differing views on using the country's vast mineral resources.

Voting began at 7:00 a.m. (local time) for the general election held in every four years to choose members to the 76-seat Parliament. Polling will close at 8:00 p.m. and counting will begin thereafter, Media reports said.

While the MPP is open to foreign investment, the Democratic Party is cautious about foreign participation in developing the Central Asian nation's vast coal and mineral reserves.

Among the candidates is a former professional sumo wrestler who is seeking re-election on the Democratic Party ticket.
