Smokey Robinson has revealed plans for a new initiative to raise awareness about world crises using Twitter and Facebook. In a statement on Thursday, the soul legend explained that he will use special tweets dubbed "Smoke Alarms" to quickly spread the word about developing situations all over the world.

"In this digital age we have the tools to level the playing field for those in need, so I'm calling on my friends and fans to lend their voices to mine, so we can collectively give voice to those who have none," Robinson said.

Smokey has enlisted a host of his celebrity friends who will use their legions of Twitter followers to spread the word on disasters like famine, genocide and drought.

Actors James Franco, Eva Longoria and Hilary Duff, and musicians Elton John, Daryl Hall and Brandy Norwood have already signed on.
