6/29/2012 5:52 AM ET

A U.S. military helicopter was destroyed in fire after it made an emergency landing at a southern seaside village in South Korea on Friday. No casualties were reported.

Citing fire officials, the Yonhap news agency reported that the MH-53 helicopter of the U.S. Navy caught fire after crashlanding on a paddy field in Pohang, 375 kilometers southeast of capital Seoul. The aircraft was gutted before firefighters reached the scene.

All 12 U.S. solders on board the chopper quickly evacuated and no injuries were reported. "The fire began at the propeller following the emergency landing and moved into the fuel tank and the main body. No damage was reported except the destruction of the aircraft," Yonhap quoted fire officials as saying.

The helicopter was ferrying soldiers and military supplies to a U.S. Navy unit. Police and the U.S. military are jointly investigating the accident.
