Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir Dies

Former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Shamir died on Saturday at a nursing home in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv. He was 96.

Shamir was Israel's seventh prime minister and served from 1983 to 1984 and 1986 to 1992. He was a hardliner and believed that Israel should not give up land for peace.

Shamir suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. His body will be laid to rest with state honors on Monday. His wife Shulamit died last year.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13 to 5 in favor of the bill, with three Republicans joining with the panel's ten Democrats in voting to support the legislation. Existing home sales in the U.S. saw a modest increase in the month of April, according to a report released by the National Association of Realtors on Wednesday. NAR said existing home sales climbed 0.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.97 million in April from an upwardly revised 4.94 million in March.
