Katy Perry's documentary Part of Me: 3D reportedly got off to a disappointing start in its first weekend in theaters. The tour documentary cost Insurge Studios about $12 million to make and pulled just $7 million at the box office in its first weekend.
The box office bomb is a stark contrast to the success of Justin Bieber's tour documentary Never Say Never, which had a similar price tag, but brought in nearly $30 million in its opening weekend last year.
Speaking with NME.com, Perry explained the choice to spend the extra money and shoot the tour doc in 3D:
"I wanted to show people this parade that surrounds me, I wanted them to see the engine. I wanted people to be able to experience the tour and all the joy it brought, which is why we shot it in 3D."
