The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr will receive an honorary doctorate from Salford University later this week. Marr will get his doctorate of arts as part of the university's July graduation ceremonies.
The 48-year-old musician became a visiting professor at the university in 2007 and told the Daily Express that he was "very pleased to be given an honorary degree by Salford University."
"I've enjoyed working with the students in my capacity as visiting professor," Marr continued. "Hopefully we can find some more opportunities for creative work in the future."
On Twitter, Marr joked about preparing for the ceremony: "Dr Johnny was being fitted for a gown. They say it's a gown but it's not. It's a cape."
The university said the honor was for Marr's "outstanding achievements."
