Earnings Watch For July 16 (C, JBHT, UAL)

Financial services giant Citigroup, Inc. (C: Quote) is expected to report results for the second quarter before the market opens today. The company is expected to earn $0.89 per share on revenues of $18.76 billion. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported earnings of $1.09 per share on revenues of $20.62 billion. The stock closed Friday at $26.65. (The stock declined about 25% in Q2; MA(50)- $27.49; MA(100)- $31.09; 52-wk H/L $40.50/$21.40)

JB Hunt Transport Services Inc. (JBHT: Quote) is due to post second-quarter results. The trucking company is expected to record earnings of $0.67 per share compared to $0.53 per share last year, on revenues of $1.30 billion. Shares of JBHT closed Friday's trade at $59.09. (The stock rose around 10% in Q2; MA(50)- $56.75; MA(100)- $55.37; 52-wk H/L $61.18/$34.42)

Chicago-based United Continental Holdings, Inc. (UAL: Quote) is scheduled to report second-quarter results. Quarterly earnings are expected to increase to $1.70 per share from $1.49 per share in the same quarter a year earlier. Also, the company is anticipated to generate revenues of $10.05 billion, up from $9.70 billion recorded a year ago. UAL closed Friday's session at $24.14. (The stock gained nearly 13% in Q2; MA(50)- $23.45; MA(100)- $22.31; 52-wk H/L $25.84/$15.51)

Gannett Co., Inc. (GCI: Quote), Lincare Holdings Inc. (LNCR: Quote) and Packaging Corp. of America (PKG: Quote) will also report their results today.

China's manufacturing sector contracted for the first time in seven months in May amid poor demand, fueling concerns that the weakness in the economy may persist for some more time. The headline purchasing managers' index, an indicator of the health of the factory sector, fell to a seven-month low of 49.6 in May from 50.4 in April. Readings below 50 indicate contraction of the sector. Hewlett-Packard Co. said Wednesday after the markets closed that its second quarter profit fell 32% from last year, hurt by lower revenue and weaker margins amid a slump in PC sales. However, the company's quarterly earnings per share, excluding items, came in above analysts' expectations, but its quarterly revenue fell short of analysts' forecast. Stocks showed a substantial downturn over the course of the trading day on Wednesday after seeing some strength in morning trading. Renewed worries about the Federal Reserve tapering its asset purchase program contributed to the sharp pullback by the markets. The major averages climbed off their worst levels going into the close but still ended the day firmly negative.
