Peter Jackson may be in talks to develop a third installment of his most recent franchise "The Hobbit." Jackson has already manned the helm for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (out December 14), and will direct "The Hobbit: There and Back Again."

The "Lord of the Rings" helmer spoke to HitFix.com about the possible project, saying:

"We have certainly been talking to the studio about some of the material we can't film, and we've been asking them so we can do a bit more filming next year," he said. "I don't know what would come of that, whether it'd be extended editions or whatnot. But those discussions are ongoing."

Any new material could be culled from "The Lord of the Rings Appendices," in which author J.R.R. Tolkien details the history of his Middle Earth setting.

"There's other parts of the story that we'd like to tell that we haven't been able to tell yet," Jackson told ComingSoon.net.
