Rajesh Khanna, widely regarded as the first superstar of the Bollywood film genre, has died at the age of 69. Khanna became ill suddenly and died in Mumbai, surrounded by his wife and fellow Bollywood star Dimple Kapadia and their two daughters.
Khanna's son in law, actor Akshay Kumar was also by his bedside at the time of his passing, several sources report.
He got his start in the 1960's and appeared in over 170 different films. He was the leading man in nearly all of his films and was showered with awards over the course of his career.
The actor ushered in a new era of celebrity in Indian culture as men and women alike would swarm him in public. Obsessed woman would frequently write letters proposing marriage to him and some even went so far as to marry photographs of the Khanna.
