In a new interview with the Today Show's Matt Lauer, Elton John admitted to regretting his past drug abuse. The "Honky Cat" singer calls drug addiction a "disease."

"You know, I was having people die right, left and center around me, friends," he said. "And yet, I didn't stop the life that I had, which is the terrible thing about addiction. It's that — you know, it's that bad of a disease."

Currently, Elton is prepping the release of his new memoir, Love Is the Cure: on Life, Loss and the End of AIDS, and told USA Today that his present involvement with AIDS-related charities is owed to past inaction.

"I'm making up for it. There is so much more to be done," he said.

Proceeds from sales of John's memoir will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
